Singaporean Elderly, The Unknown Heroes

Have you ever thought what will you be or you do when you are in your 60s, 70s or maybe 80s? You have worked hard on your young age with a goal to enjoy what you have in your old days. Maybe you picture yourself enjoying your retired days, traveling the world, sit on a beach bent somewhere far away from your home country enjoy the sunset or a simple one, you just relaxing at your house reading your favorite books and watching your grandchildren play around happily. I do have those pictures in my head.

A couple days ago, I just went back from my short vacation to Singapore. When I was there, the thing that quite gave me a shock was the Singaporean elderly who are still working in their 60s to 80s. They are cleaning tables and dustbins, sweeping and mobbing the floor, collecting rubbish, even cleaning the toilets. I know that there is a regulation in Singapore that said those kind of jobs are only for the elderly, but isn't break your heart when you see these pictures?

Singapore Trip : First Trip

The first time I went to Singapore was at end of May 2010 to visit my boyfriend who worked there. Flight from Surabaya to Singapore takes 2 hours. I remember I got a promo airfare for IDR 1.3 million (about USD 145) 2 ways. I went there alone. During my visit in Singapore, I stayed in my boyfriend's apartment in Potong Pasir.

Singapore is a really well organized and clean country. People are not allowed to drink or eat  in MRT and buses. At first, it was a little hard to understand Singapore's English accent and they use Singlish so often, but in 1 or 2 days I could adapt to it. Chinese people in Singapore usually use Chinese as their daily conversation language. I'm a Chinese but my Chinese is not that good. I had to say, "Sorry, can you speak English please?" quite so many times, because they talked to me in Chinese instantly when they saw me.

Indonesia Trip : Bintan Resort

I had a chance to visit Bintan Resort on December 2010 for free. Yes, FREE! I joined my bf's company trip for 3 days 2 nights. Bintan Resort is placed in north of Bintan Island, Indonesia. Eventhough I live in Indonesia, I went there through Singapore. Why? because flight fare from Surabaya to Singapore is cheaper than Surabaya to Bintan. Ironic isn't it? I went to Singapore the day before we went to Bintan. There were about 30 persons who joined the trip. We departed from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, Singapore. It was 1 hour trip by a fast ferry. Due to the monsoon season, the wave was quite big and I had seasick. The ferry itself was quite big. Inside the ferry there was a delly that sell snacks and drinks.
