Review : Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

Title : Lies Beneath (Lies Beneath #1)
Author :

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans and absorb their positive energy. Usually, they select their victims at random, but this time around, the underwater clan chooses its target for a reason: revenge. They want to kill Jason Hancock, the man they blame for their mother's death.

It's going to take a concerted effort to lure the aquaphobic Hancock onto the water. Calder's job is to gain Hancock's trust by getting close to his family. Relying on his irresistible good looks and charm, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter Lily. Easy enough, but Calder screws everything up by falling in love--just as Lily starts to suspect there's more to the monster-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined, and just as the mermaids threaten to take matters into their own hands, forcing Calder to choose between them and the girl he loves.

One thing's for sure: whatever Calder decides, the outcome won't be pretty -goodreads
My first mermaid novel.
Forget about Ariel. Here comes killer mermaids and merman :D

Calder White and his sisters, Maris, Pavati and Tallulah, live from human's positive energy. It is their nature to kill human so they can live. One day, their long gone human enemy, Jason Hancock, has back to the lake area where they live. It was time for them to make a revenge of their mother's death. The plan was easy, Calder sent by his sisters to seduce Lily, Hancock's daughter and gain Hancock's trust then lure him to the water to kill him. Calder began to falling for Lily and screwed up all the plan. He had to choose between his love to Lily and avenge for his mother.

When I first saw the cover, which is gorgeous, I thought the main character would be a mermaid instead of merman. I am more a fan of heroin than a hero, so I was a little disappointed when I found out that the main character was a male. I must say my favorite characters in this novel are Calder's sisters. Beautiful, smart and deadly mermaids. I wished they appeared more in the story. I was most enthusiastic when I read their part. I'm not a fan of Calder. There is something lack in his character. Maybe he wasn't as strong as I hope.

The story plot was easy to follow. One thing I don't like : the romance. Calder and Lily's relationship almost killed me. I yelled in my head a lot (because you know I couldn't literally yell at people around me), "GOSH Calder!! Just go with your sisters' plan. Stop that flowery thingy you have with Lily and do your revenge!" The romance parts frustrated me. If I could go inside the book, I would like to smack Calder on the head, hard enough until he says "OUCH!" to recall him of his true purpose.

Some reviews I read said that it is a dark novel. I didn't find it that dark though. Yes, it is about a killing and it has intense parts, but not that much. Crime series fans might be feel the same like me. I expected more dark sides of the story. I expected more thrilling events that can make me chill and goosebumps. I did got them from Calder's sisters but not from Calder himself.

My rating : 3.5/5
